COMMUNITY GARDEN
In 2015, the Sauble Township Board, consisting of Supervisor Bill Gillard, Clerk Pam Krusinski, Treasurer Sharon McGhee, Trustees Patricia Bishop and Gail Raad, applied for grants from the Lake County Community Foundation (LCCF) and from Great Lakes Energy People's Fund to create a Community Garden.
The grants were approved and work began to develop the garden in the Spring of 2016 The garden was established on a small portion (120 x 120 ft.) of the 11 acre parcel of property that the township owns on 5 Mile RD across from Leisure Time Campground. Residents were asked to pay a small fee for a plot to grow their own produce with the stipulation of donating a portion to a food pantry. A few plots were reserved for growing corn specifically for donation to the food pantry. The Community Garden was well received and the Bread of Life Food Panty in Baldwin was very appreciative and still is today. Today, the garden continues and is managed by volunteer residents, Tracy Baker, Gary Nugent, and Bill Rodgers. Plot size is approximately 10 x 10 ft., but might vary each year. If you are interested in reserving a plot, please contact the township by calling (231) 266-8384, or email: [email protected] |
